Newport Hospital ranked second among Rhode Island hospitals on Newsweek’s America’s Best-in-State Hospitals 2027 list, placing ahead of every hospital in the state except Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.
Five Rhode Island hospitals made the list. Rhode Island Hospital ranked first, Newport Hospital second, South County Hospital in Wakefield third, The Miriam Hospital in Providence fourth and Westerly Hospital fifth.
“This distinction is especially meaningful because it reflects several important measures including hospital quality and patient experience,” said Dr. Tenny Thomas, president and chief medical officer of Newport Hospital. “More importantly, it highlights the extraordinary commitment our staff demonstrate every day across every department and every role. I am incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished.”
Newsweek produces the annual ranking with Statista, a data research firm. Hospitals are scored on four criteria: quality metrics, reputation and recommendations, patient experience data, and Statista’s survey of how hospitals implement patient-reported outcome measures — standardized questionnaires patients complete about their functional well-being and quality of life.
Newport Hospital is the only hospital in Newport County. It is part of Brown University Health, the not-for-profit system formerly known as Lifespan, which also includes Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam, Bradley Hospital, Saint Anne’s Hospital, Morton Hospital, Gateway Healthcare and Brown Health Medical Group.
“Seeing both The Miriam Hospital and Newport Hospital on this list affirms that Rhode Islanders can count on exceptional care in their own communities,” said Sarah Frost, Brown University Health’s chief of hospital operations and president of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s.
